Ashwaganda is an adaptogenic herb native to India that is believed to increases the body's vital energy, overall health and longevity.
Traditionally it has been widely used with other Ayurvedic medicine to treat stress related discomforts, hypertension, impotence, infertility, libido, joint pains, nerve pains, arthritis, insomnia, for recuperation, aging and children with slow growth.
Ashwaganda consists mostly of glycosides, alkaloids, and withanolides. Withanolides are thought to be responsible for the multiple medicinal applications of Ashwagandha. These compounds are steroid like and are very similar in appearance and action to the active constituents of Ginseng. The withanolides present in Ashwagandha have been studied in multiple animal studies focusing on the effects of inflammation, immune function and anti cancer properties.
Preliminary human studies have found various constituents of Ashwaganda exhibit a variety of therapeutic effects with little or no associated toxicity:
Anti-Tumor Effects - enhanced the favorable effects of radiation for tumor regression and inhibit growth of sarcoma.
Rejuvenating Activity - increased the strength, stamina, vigor and energy in both athletes and those that are suffering from fatigue or recuperating from illness.
Anti-Inflammatory / Anti-Arthritic Activity - in a study combining Ashwagandha with Boswellia serrata the severity of pain, grip strength and morning stiffness of arthritic patients improved. Ashwagandha has a high steroid content with more potent action than hydrocortisone and without the side effects.
Sports Related Injuries - used as a safe natural substitute for anabolic steroids to increase muscle size and strength- without the effects of the synthetic hormones.
Aphrodisiac - aids in increasing sperm count in men and fertility in women and can help to increase sexual energy.
In addition to the whole body effects of Ashwaganda, the herb is also prescribed today for the following conditions:
- Improved libido in both men and women
